JAMAICA PRODUCERS SHIPPING COMPANY LTD.
|
|
Jamaica Producers Shipping Company (JPSC) is the successor to the Jamaica Banana Producers’ Steamship Company (JBPSC), which was founded in 1929. JBPSC made history by being the first shipping line ever to be 100% Jamaican owned. It started life with the ownership of four meat-carrying vessels that were converted for carrying bananas. These vessels were named the Jamaica Progress, the Jamaica Planter, the Jamaica Pioneer, and the Jamaica Producer.

During World War II, the British Admiralty commandeered all four ships for war service, and they played an important role in delivering food to the United States and the United Kingdom. By the end of the war all but the Jamaica Producer were sunk. The Jamaica Producer also had the distinction of shooting down a German Stuka dive-bomber that attacked her in the English Channel, and for this, the Admiralty awarded her with a commemorative plaque. She continued sailing until 1962 when she was taken out of service.
Today, JPSC has in its service, four fast state-of-the-art reefer vessels which provide a reliable weekly service to Jamaica, the United Kingdom, the European Continent, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic. These vessels provide a complete palletised service below deck, a container service above deck for dry and refrigerated containers, and are equipped to handle break bulk cargo, including vehicles, heavy lift equipment, and out-of-gauge pieces.
Jamaica Producers Shipping Company is represented in Jamaica by Jamaica Freight and Shipping Company, which has sub-agencies in Montego Bay and Mandeville. In the United Kingdom, JP Shipping represents the Line, and has offices in Stratford (London) and Newport, and also has receiving depots in Birmingham and Portsmouth. On the European Continent JPSC is represented by Ovet Shipping B.V. located in southern Holland, well positioned to cover the needs of the continental customers. In Costa Rica, Compañía Bananera del Trópico JP represents the Line, and has offices in both San Jose and Port Limon.
Jamaica Producers Shipping Company has prided itself on having an efficient and reliable service during its many years in the business of maritime transport.
